Gold Care
All Brohn Smith gold pieces are made using 9k, 14k or 18k solid gold, a blend of pure 24k gold fused with carefully balanced alloys to give each piece both strength and glow. We do not plate. We do not compromise.
As you wear your jewellery, it will begin to show soft markings and shifts in finish. This is not damage, it is character. Gold is a living metal. It evolves with you.
To restore its shine, soak in warm soapy water and dry with a soft cloth, or use a jewellery polishing cloth for a quick lift. Ultrasonic cleaners are also safe if you want a deeper reset. If you want a professional finish, you are always welcome to bring it into our studio for refinishing.
For 9k gold specifically, avoid chlorine and harsh chemicals found in pools, spas and cleaning products. The copper and silver alloys within 9k can react to these elements and weaken the metal over time.
Treat it with intention and your piece will outlive you.
Sterling Silver Care
Sterling silver is alive — it changes with you. Its surface will shift depending on your skin chemistry, how often you wear it, and where it rests when you don’t. That evolution is not damage — it is proof of contact, of history.
Silver prefers to be worn. Your skin’s natural oils help slow tarnish and keep the metal glowing. Left untouched for long periods, it will darken, but with a quick reset, it returns to life.
To restore clarity, use a dedicated silver dip or gently polish with a silver cloth. Both will bring back an immediate shine. If you want a professional finish, you are always welcome to bring it into our studio for refinishing.
Avoid chlorine and harsh chemicals found in pools, spas and cleaning products, as sterling silver is reactive to these elements and can become brittle with exposure.
Tarnish, fine scratches and soft shifts in tone are expected signs of wear, part of your jewellery’s journey. They are not faults, and they are not covered by warranty. They are simply your signature.
Diamond Care
Diamonds are strong, but not invincible. They resist scratching from anything except another diamond, but they can still chip under impact or loosen in their setting if hit with force. Treat them as armour, not as indestructible.
Keep your diamond pieces stored individually to prevent contact with other stones or metals. A soft pouch or original packaging in a dry, cool place is ideal.
To clean, rinse in warm water with mild soap and gently brush with a soft toothbrush, or simply wipe with a lint-free cloth to revive clarity.
We recommend periodic check-ins at the studio so we can assess the setting and ensure the stone remains secure for life.
A diamond should outlast you, a little care makes sure of it.
Gemstone Care
Even the strongest stones rely on delicate engineering. Fine gold or silver prongs, no matter how well made, can shift over time if knocked against hard surfaces like door handles or stone benches. Impacts often go unnoticed until the stone is no longer sitting where it should be. Respect the setting as much as the stone.
Our Australian parti sapphires are incredibly durable, but like all precious gems, they benefit from care. Wipe with a soft cloth and mild soapy water to restore clarity. Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals or household cleaners, they may react with both the metal and the stone.
Opals and softer stones should never be exposed to ultrasonic cleaning, as the vibrations can cause internal fractures.
If a piece is part of your daily ritual, we recommend occasional studio check-ins so we can make sure every stone is still locked in place.
Your jewellery is built for life, but life still leaves marks. Treat it accordingly.
Sustainability & Ethics
At Brohn Smith, we don’t believe in luxury that takes more than it gives. Every gemstone, from our signature Australian sapphires to natural and lab-grown diamonds, is sourced with intention, not convenience.
We work exclusively with partners who operate within Queensland’s Gemfields, where mining is carried out predominantly underground to minimise disruption to the landscape. These are suppliers with decades in the trade who understand both the privilege and responsibility of extraction. Every effort is made to recycle, reuse and reduce throughout the process.
Our pieces are forged by hand, not mass-produced. Made locally in Australia and New Zealand, using metals that can be melted, reshaped and reborn. Jewellery that carries weight, not waste.
This is luxury with a backbone. Raw. Refined. Responsible.
Chain Care
Our chains are crafted in Italy with precision links fine enough to feel like fabric. That delicacy is part of their beauty, but it also means they should be worn with awareness. Like any fine structure, they can stretch or catch if pulled with force.
If your chain is made in 9k gold, avoid exposure to chlorine found in pools, spas and cleaning products. The copper and silver alloys within 10k can react to these chemicals, causing the metal to weaken and become brittle over time.
Store your chain flat or hanging to prevent kinks, and fasten the clasp when not worn to avoid tangling. A little conscious care and it will last a lifetime, soft to the touch, strong in presence.
How to Clean Your Chain
To clean your Brohn Smith chain at home, fill a small bowl with warm water and a drop of mild liquid soap. Soak the chain for a few minutes, then gently rub along its full length using a soft cloth or very soft toothbrush. Rinse with clean water and pat dry with care.
If you prefer a deeper clean, an ultrasonic cleaner is a worthwhile investment, it uses sound vibrations to dislodge dirt without damage.
For soldered or permanent chains, we recommend an in-studio clean so the chain can be safely removed and reattached by hand.
Italian-made links deserve attention, treat them gently and they will stay fluid and radiant for life.
Did You Know?
The most common reason fine chains break is by stretch. Our Italian-made chains are crafted from solid gold and silver, which means they’re strong but still malleable. With regular pulling or getting caught on clothing or surfaces, the links can slowly elongate over time.
A stretched chain is a vulnerable chain, and if it gives way, you risk losing more than metal.
Every so often, measure your chain from clasp to clasp and compare it to its original length. You’ll find that information in your order confirmation. If the jump rings are no longer perfectly round, that’s another sign the chain has experienced stress.
If you notice stretching, send it to us. We can replace or repair the chain for a fraction of the cost of replacing the full piece, and restore its integrity properly.
For 9k gold chains, avoid chlorine entirely. Pools, spas and cleaning products can erode the metal over time, weakening links from the inside out.
Preserve the link. Protect the story.
Knots
If your chain becomes knotted, untangle it as soon as possible. Leaving it will only tighten the knot and strain the links.
Lay it flat on a hard surface and use two fine pins or needles. Start by working into the centre of the knot to gently loosen the tension. As gaps appear, guide the chain open slowly, never pull from the ends or force it through.
Treat it like a surgical procedure. Precision over pressure. A few minutes of patience is far better than a broken link.
Clasps
Our finer clasps rely on internal springs, which can weaken over time with pressure or repeated strain. If a clasp begins to feel loose or doesn’t lock as cleanly as it should, it’s simply a sign of wear — not failure. We can replace it easily in the studio.
For chains made in 10k gold, avoid chlorine exposure entirely. Pools, spas and many cleaning agents contain chemicals that react with the copper and silver alloys in 10k gold, causing the metal to weaken from within and increasing the risk of breakage.
A chain is only as strong as its clasp, check it occasionally, and let us replace it before it gives up.
Engagement Ring Care
Your ring is built to last, but even heirlooms need upkeep. We offer complimentary cleaning and setting checks at The Loft or by appointment in our studio, especially recommended for claw-set pieces.
At home, use warm soapy water with a soft toothbrush and pat dry with a cloth to restore clarity. A polishing cloth or ultrasonic cleaner is ideal for deeper resets, provided your stone and setting allow for it.
If your ring includes claws or prongs, have the setting checked every six months to ensure the stone remains secure. Pressure, knocks and daily wear can shift metal over time, it’s a small ritual that protects something irreplaceable.
Thank You
Thank you for choosing Brohn Smith.
Our pieces are made slowly, by hand, with intention, so when one finds its way to you, it means something. You’re not just buying jewellery. You’re carrying a fragment of history, of metal pulled from the earth, of craft passed through human hands.
Wear it hard. Let it mark with time. Make it yours.
If you ever need care, adjustment or rebirth, we’re here. Jewellery doesn’t end at purchase. It becomes part of your story, and we’re honoured to be written into it.
With gratitude,
Brohn Smith
