Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Brohn Smith jewellery made?
Every piece is made and finished by hand in our studio in Sydney. The studio is The Loft, Level 2, 113–115 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst NSW 2010.
How long will my piece take?
Pieces held in stock are dispatched within 1 to 3 business days. Made to order pieces are handmade for you and take 4 to 6 weeks. Engagement rings and High Jewellery take 4 to 8 weeks. Bespoke commissions and stone-set pieces may take longer, and we confirm a timeframe with you directly before we begin.
What does shipping cost?
Shipping is confirmed at checkout before you pay. Every Australian order is sent express, fully insured, tracked and requiring a signature on delivery. Once dispatched, express delivery takes 1 to 3 business days to metropolitan areas and 2 to 5 business days to regional areas.
Do you ship internationally?
Not at this time. We ship within Australia only. If you are overseas and would like a piece, email info@brohnsmith.com and we will let you know when international shipping opens.
Can I return a piece?
If you change your mind, you may return an eligible piece within 14 days of delivery for a refund or exchange. It must be unworn, in its original condition and packaging, with all hallmarks intact. Return shipping is at your cost unless the piece arrived damaged or incorrect. Made to order, bespoke and engraved pieces are made specifically for you and are not eligible for change of mind returns.
What metals do you work in?
Solid 9K and 18K gold, in yellow and white, and 925 sterling silver. We do not plate. Plating wears through; solid metal does not, which is why a Brohn Smith piece can be polished and reworked for as long as you own it.
What is a Parti sapphire?
A Parti sapphire is a single sapphire that shows two or more colours at once, most often blue, green and gold, divided in bands or zones through the one stone. The colour comes from the way the crystal grew rather than from any treatment. Australia, and the Queensland and New South Wales sapphire fields in particular, is the best known source. Because the zoning is a product of how each crystal formed, no two are alike, which is why we set them individually rather than matching them into pairs. Read more in our guide to Australian Parti sapphires.
Can I visit the studio?
Yes, by appointment. The Loft in Darlinghurst is where the work is done, and it is the best way to see a piece in the metal and try sizes. Collection of a finished order in person can also be arranged. Book through the appointment page or email info@brohnsmith.com.
How do I know my ring size?
We use Australian and UK letter sizing. Each ring page carries a size guide with the circumference and diameter for every letter, and the US equivalent. Sizes available vary by design, since some forms can be made across a wide range and others cannot. Our ring size guide shows how to measure at home. If you are between sizes or unsure, email info@brohnsmith.com and we will help.
Do you take bespoke commissions?
Yes. A commission usually starts with a conversation about the stone, the form and the metal, then hand carving in the studio. Timeframes depend on the piece and the stone, and we confirm one with you directly rather than quoting a standard lead time. Start with a request through the appointment page, or email info@brohnsmith.com. More on how a commission works.
How should I care for my piece?
Clean gold and silver with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Keep jewellery away from chlorine and household cleaning products, and take it off before swimming or heavy physical work. Store stone-set pieces separately so they do not scratch each other, and store chains flat or hanging so they do not kink. Silver prefers to be worn. Soft marks and shifts in finish are natural and are part of how a handmade piece ages.
